Michael Nelson Obituary

Michael Shane Nelson 50, of Des Moines, IA passed away on October 25, 2024 at his home in Des Moines, IA. He was born January 16, 1974, in Storm Lake, IA to Kathy Jo Nelson-Nuss (Potts) and Bruce Nelson of Glidden, IA.

Michael graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1992 where he enjoyed choir, theater, cheerleading and band. Mike served in the United States Air Force from 1998 to 2000. He worked as a cellular tower technician, electronics technician, and construction low voltage installer. In his free time Michael enjoyed golf and fishing. Michael was known best for his singing and enjoyed karaoke with friends. Michael was a movie buff. He loved Stars Wars and the Chicago Bears. Evident in his artful and colorful tattoos.

He was preceded in death by his beloved mother Kathy Jo Nuss.

Surviving are his children, Jordan of Casper, WY , James of Des Moines, IA, and Colton of Cedar Falls, IA, parents Bruce (Linda) Nelson of Glidden, IA, sister Gina (Steve) Chapman of Treynor, sister Kari Hunter of Glidden, brother Curt (Melissa) Nelson of Altoona, IA, sister Julie (Zac) Clark of Ankeny, brother Brian (Mindy) Glenn of Bloomfield, 12 nieces and nephews, many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Michael’s cremains will be laid to rest next to his mother at Shaul Cemetery in Ottumwa at 10am on Friday November 15, 2024 with military honors conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion. The family invites all to a memorial luncheon following the burial service at the Polk City American Legion Post #232 from 1-5pm located at 114 W. Broadway St. Polk City, IA.

Memorials will be accepted by the family and will be submitted to the VA Central Iowa Healthcare System - Domiciliary.
