Obituary

Mike Koufer, 81, died Wednesday, September 24, 2003 at Kavanagh House on 56th Street. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, September 25 at Beth El Jacob Synagogue, 954 Cummins Parkway. Burial will be in Jewish Glendale Cemetery.

Mike was born July 6, 1922 and was a lifelong resident of Des Moines. After graduating from Des Moines North High School in 1940, Mike served in the Philippine Islands during World War II as a member of the United States Army. Returning to Des Moines after the war, Mike owned and operated two grocery stores, "Foodland" and "30th Street Market." In 1959, Mike joined U.S. Homes, Incorporated, ultimately serving as Vice-President and also a President of the company's subsidiary, Sandler-Bilt Homes in Boone, Iowa until his retirement in 1982. Mike took great pride in his work and was well-respected for his forthrightness with and kindness to his customers, suppliers and employees alike.

Mike's passions in life were his family, particularly his two grandsons, and meeting his fellow retired cronies at McDonald's every morning to discuss life's two most important subjects...the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs.

He is survived and will be sorely missed by his wife, Rose, to whom he would have been married 60 years in March, 2004; a son, Alan of Nashville, Tennessee; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Tom Moser of Westlake Village, California; grandsons, Josh and Max Moser; and his sister, Molly Sandler of Des Moines.
