Mildred J. Carlsen, 83, a resident of Life Care Center in Corona, California, passed away from natural causes on Wednesday, February 21, 2007, at Corona Regional Medical Center in Corona, California. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m., Friday, March 2, 2007, at the Windsor Heights Lutheran Church, 1240 - 66th Street in Windsor Heights. Burial will take place at Glendale Cemetery.

Mildred was born, April 26, 1923, in Osakis, Minnesota, the daughter of Einer and Vita (Kjoller) Romer. Mildred graduated from Dana College in Blair, Nebraska with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English. She married Stanley L. Carlsen on June 12, 1947, and two children were born to this union.

Mildred joined Stanley as pastor's wife in ministry at Lutheran Churches in Trufant, Michigan and Shelby, Iowa before accompanying him when he served four years as a Chaplain in the United States Air Force. After Stanley's military service Mildred again ministered as pastor's wife in Mason City and Charles City, Iowa before coming to Des Moines where Stanley was pastor at Central Lutheran Church until his retirement in 1988. Mildred loved music and reading and had a beautiful solo voice. She was active in the church as a bible study leader, choir member and English tutor for Cambodian and Vietnamese refugees.

Mrs. Carlsen was preceded in death by her parents, Einer and Vita Romer; as well as her husband, Stanley L. Carlsen. She is survived by her daughter, Anne L. (Jeff) Toy of Whittier, California; son, Noel (Angela) Carlsen of Murrieta, California; sister, Alice (Norlan) Hanson of Oregon, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Erica, Theodore and Karrie Carlsen; great-grandchild, Peyton Carlsen; step-grandchildren, Rosa and Karla Rubi and Carlos A. Cabanas; and step-great-grandchildren, Isaac and Isaiah Cabanas.

Memorial contributions may be made to Windsor Heights Lutheran Church and Dana College, Blair, Nebraska.
