Obituary

On June 19, 2024, with sadness but also great joy, the family of Myrna Weiland saw her pass from this world to be with Jesus in Heaven. Because of her deep faith, she longed for this day to come. At the same time, Myrna lived her life here on Earth fully. And for those who met her or knew her well, they universally remarked on her kindness, compassion, vibrant smile and love.

Myrna was born on May 21, 1937, to Pastor Emil and Elvira Spaude in their rural Atwater, Minnesota home. She was the third of their four children, along with her eldest sister, Marlene, sister, Mertice, and younger brother, Myron (Mike). Baptized here as a baby, she became a child of God, a relationship that was both foundational and personal to her. Some of Myrna’s fondest memories were also made in Atwater, like that of learning in the single-room parochial school, ice skating on the pond in back of the church, and playing in the woods behind the school. The family moved to Windom, MN, where Myrna was confirmed, an event she described as feeling the power of the Holy Spirit coming into her heart. The family moved to Hutchinson, MN, where Myrna graduated from high school. She attended Concordia College in St. Paul, MN, and in her first week of studies, she met her future husband, Lloyd. After obtaining her associates degree and teaching school for several years in Michigan and Illinois (and later Missouri), Myrna and Lloyd were happily married on July 31, 1960 in Minneapolis.

The couple would bring four children into this world - Brent, Beth, Todd and Troy - after having lost their first stillborn baby, Jonathon. Similar to her own upbringing, the Weilands served in various Lutheran congregations over the years, from Clarks Fork, MO, to Yankton, SD, to Higginsville, MO, and near Jewell, IA. Myrna’s primary vocation was “domestic engineer”. She was unapologetic about the importance she placed on raising her four kids. She was a naturally-gifted cook. Her lasagna, smoked brisket, apple pies and cherry “yard stick” pastries were just a few favorites! When not busy at home, Myrna filled many roles at church including choir director, bible class and circle leaders. An accomplished musician, she often was called upon to accompany choirs, as well as sing at weddings, funerals and more. Her love affair with music was so beautiful to behold. Prior to retiring in Johnston, IA, to be closer to their kids, Lloyd and Myrna moved to Eden Prairie, MN where Lloyd served in a hospital chaplaincy role, and Myrna spent cherished time with her mom in her final years. Nurturing family was essential to her.

Myrna truly loved to be with people everywhere she went and throughout her life. While never wanting to be the center of attention, she actively engaged in pinochle card parties, family lake time up in Minnesota, and attending her children’s, grandchildren’s, and great grandchild’s sporting, music other important life events. After husband Lloyd passed, Myrna experienced a “second wind” at McAuley Terrace in Johnston, living independently despite the necessity of using a wheelchair to move about. She thoroughly enjoyed filling her days by lunching with neighbors, playing bingo, listening to performers, and of course, attending chapel service.

Myrna is survived by her daughter, Beth (Doug) Quam; son Todd (Elizabeth Stieneke) Weiland and son, Troy (Jeffrey Niemann) Weiland; grandchildren, Devan (Sydney) and Landon (Alyssa) Quam and Jacob Weiland, and great grandchild, Hallie Quam. She was preceded in death by many beloved family members, notably husband, Lloyd, and son, Brent and baby, Jonathon.

The memorial service, officiated by the Reverend Bill Bernau, will be held at Saint James Lutheran Church, 5665 Merle Hay Road, Johnston, Iowa on Saturday, July 27, 2024 at 11:00 AM. Myrna expressed her desire for the service to be centered on 1 Corinthians 13, The Love Chapter. A visitation for family to receive guests will begin at 10:00 AM, and a luncheon with fellowship will directly follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Saint James Lutheran Church, 5665 Merle Hay Road, P.O. Box 62, Johnston, IA 50131. (https://www.stjamesjohnston.org) or Hope Ministries, P.O. Box 862, Des Moines, IA 50304. (https://www.hopeiowa.org/donatenow/).
