Nancy E. Kooker, 89, passed away on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at Kavanagh House in Des Moines. Memorial services will be 1:00, Thursday, April 26, 2012 at Plymouth Congregational Church, 4126 Ingersoll Avenue in Des Moines. Private interment will be in Plymouth Church Memorial Garden.

Nancy was born on November 25, 1922 in Kingsport, Tennessee. Her family included two older sisters, Juliette and Mary Jane. The family moved to Des Moines in 1928. The family attended the First Baptist Church in downtown Des Moines and later, joined Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ. Nancy boasts that she was a member of the first high school choir at Plymouth!

The family spent summers at Lake Vermillion in Minnesota where they enjoyed vacationing on their own private island. Nancy was able to return to Lake Vermillion within the past ten years with family and friends and found the island, her family's cabin, and even the outhouse was still standing!

Nancy attended Greenwood Elementary, Callanan Jr. High and Roosevelt High School as well as attending Drake University. Nancy married Ned Rood in 1947 and they had four children; Jane, Kate, Lucy and Ned. After having her children, Nancy enjoyed working at Plumbs Gift Shop, Brenton Bank, and the American Cancer Society.

In 1986, after retiring from the work force, Nancy married Bart Kooker. Nancy and Bart were very active in the Des Moines Obedience Training Club (DMOTC) showing their miniature schnauzers, Tracy and Jenny. They showed schnauzers for many years and met wonderful friends in the Miniature Schnauzer Club. Nancy also enjoyed volunteering for DMOTC, delivering obedience class information to local veterinarians and answering their phones. On occasion, she would even dispense advice to new dog owners too.

Nancy retired to Plymouth Place in 1999 and met many new friends and enjoyed playing bridge almost every night!

Nancy is survived by her children; Kate (Ted) Starostka of Urbandale, Lucy (Bob) Anderson of Clive and Edward Rood, Jr. of Des Moines; son-in-law, John Ortner of Urbandale; grandchildren, John (Nicole) and Josh Ortner, Chris (Natalie) and Curt Starostka, Ian, Maggie and Katie Anderson and Anne and Jane Rood; great-grandsons, Lucas and Owen Ortner, and other family members and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jane Ortner; parents; sisters, Patti Rose, Juliette and Mary Jane and her twin brother, Bobby.

Memorial donations may be made to her church.
