Obituary

Nancy Jean Dietrich, 78, passed from this life on Sunday, April 27, 2008 at Calvin Community in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 2, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Des Moines, of which she was a member of for many years. Burial will follow at Scotch Ridge Cemetery, rural Carlisle, Iowa.

Nancy was born on July 3, 1929 in Scotch Ridge, Iowa to Carl A. and Mildred Harriett Schooler Dietrich. She had a happy childhood and attended country school at Mt. Olive and Indianola High School. Nancy later attended Simpson College for one year and Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois. She graduated with a B.S. degree in Psychology. Nancy later attended the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, where she received a M.S. degree in religious education. Nancy never married.

Leaving home for the first time to attend college after graduating, Nancy worked in local churches for four years and then for the Board of Christian Education for six years. Then she had to have two back surgeries so she attended the University of Pittsburgh and graduated with a M.S. degree in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling. Nancy lived in Pennsylvania until she moved to her apartment on 30th Street in Des Moines, in 1972. She was formerly employed with the State of Iowa as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor. Nancy was a member of the Tuesday Club, the American Business Women's Association (ABWA) and was a Circle leader. In 1980, she was named one of the "Top Ten Women of the Year" in the American Business Women's Association. In 1994, Nancy received a State of Iowa Service Certificate for 21 and a half years of service to the State.

A significant event in her life included working for the Board of Christian Education, traveling on a job through Kentucky, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Nancy moved into Calvin Community Health Care Center in January 2001.

She is survived by her friend and caregiver, Lynnette Peterson and her children, Ashley and Tyler of Urbandale and numerous friends. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Mildred; her brother at infancy who was born premature; and her aunt Helene Schooler.

A visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, at Iles Funeral Homes – Westover Chapel in Des Moines. Memorial contributions may be made to either Westminster Presbyterian Church Foundation or the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
