Noah L. Lacona, 93, of Des Moines, longtime restauranteur and community benefactor, got his first taste of Heaven on Wednesday, January 11, 2017. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 17 at St. Ambrose Cathedral followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery.

Noah was born on May 24, 1923 in Des Moines to the late James and Teresa (Tursi) Lacona. Following graduation from Lincoln High School he married the love of his life, Sara "Sally" Cooper, and together they had five children, Christine, James, Anntoinette, Teresa and Bernadette.

Noah and Sally first moved to San Francisco where he worked at Matson Shipyard and helped build the U.S.S. Cascade. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, Third Army Division. After returning to Des Moines, he entered into the restaurant business in 1946 where he founded the Union Station Café and Noah's Ark Ristorante.

Noah was an accomplished Can-Am, SCCA driver. He raced SCCA Championship Road Atlanta numerous times and many other races including the Des Moines Ruan Grand Prix. He was a member of the Les Chevaliers of auto racing and inducted actor Paul Newman. He was a member of the Iowa Restaurant Association, Italian American Club and served as a Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus where he was an Honorary Life Member. He helped found the annual Dowling Pancake Breakfast fundraiser and supported many other local causes. Noah received the Key to the City of Des Moines and was inducted into the Lincoln High School Hall of Fame.

Noah will be remembered for his faith, humor, hospitality, generosity to the community, dedication to work and love of family. He was an anonymous philanthropist and freely fed his animal friends. He enjoyed his dogs- Maser, Rati, Lola and Asi.

Those left to cherish Noah's memory include his wife of 75 years, Sally; four children, Christine (Charles) Acri, James (Norabeth) Lacona of West Des Moines, Anntoinette "Annie" (Richard) Erickson of Kansas City, MO and Teresa Lacona of San Francisco; grandchildren, Kara (Anthony) Palladino, Jacob (Michelle) Acri, Breanna Acri, Tiffany (Steve) Lacona-Mobley, James Lacona II, Sarah Erickson and Noah (Lindsay) Erickson; 15 great grandchildren; Chelsea Lacona, Lily, Emma, Anthony, Mary, Katie and Michael Palladino, Elayna, Emoree, Evelyn and Aria Erickson, Amy, Eric, Gianna and Maxwell Acri; two sisters, Dorothy and Rosemary Lacona; sister in law, Margaret Lacona; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Bernadette Lacona-Riley; two brothers, Frank and Charles Lacona; and a sister, Josephine Bristow.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, January 16 at Iles Dunn's Chapel concluding with a 6:30 p.m. rosary and vigil service.
