Nora M. Crumb died on August 1, 2010, at Valley View Village in Des Moines, Iowa.

Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Iles Funeral Homes-Grandview Park Chapel at 3211 Hubbell Avenue, Des Moines, with a service to be held at 7:00 p.m. Friday Burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Evergreen Cemetery in Collins, Iowa.

Nora Crumb was born on January 5, 1919, in Roach, Missouri. She was the daughter of Fred and Emma Rhoads. She spent her early years in Missouri and near Indianola, Iowa. She graduated from Indianola High School in 1936 and attended Simpson College. She taught in rural schools near Nevada and Indianola.

While teaching, she met Howard Crumb. They were married on January 12, 1944. They had four children: Beverly, Linda, Loren, and Lois.

Besides raising their children, Nora worked in the Indianola schools' food service, at Look magazine, and for the State of Iowa. She retired in 1984. After retirement, she was a volunteer aide at Horace Mann Elementary School.

Nora loved to garden, read, sew, and travel. She won many prizes for her flower and vegetable gardens in Indianola. She continued her gardening after she and Howard moved to Des Moines. Nora, Howard, and the kids travelled at least one week each summer. They didn't camp because Howard always said camping was too much work and not much fun for Nora. Wherever they travelled, Nora always picked up rocks to take home for her garden.

Her sewing projects included clothing for her children and quilts. She made a quilt for each of her children. She also pieced and sewed a quilt of the state of Iowa that hung in state Capitol and in the Amana Welcome Center.

Nora was a wonderful mother. She was always willing to help her children with school projects. She was also a Blue Bird and Camp Fire Girls leader. She was a good cook, especially her pies, cinnamon rolls, and beef and noodles.

Nora is survived by her children, Bev Crumb-Gesme (Ron Gesme), Linda Cowger, Loren Crumb (Linda) and Lois Wheeland (Lance) and grandchildren, Ginger Hollister (Fred), Paige Cowger, Ashley Wheeland, Luke Wheeland (Corey) and Sarah Wheeland. Nora is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Christian and Conrad Hollister.

Nora was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, six brothers and one sister.

Memorials may be directed to the Des Moines Public Library in her name.
