Owen Richard Kliegl, 97, passed away on October 6, 2019, at the Madrid Home for the Aged with his family by his side. A visitation will be held at St. Malachy’s Catholic Church in Madrid, Iowa on Thursday, October 10, 2019, from 5:00-7:00 p.m., immediately followed by a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at St. Malachy’s Catholic Church on the following morning, Friday, October 11, 2019, at 11:00 a.m.

Owen was born on October 27, 1921, to Henry Kliegl and Mabel (De Mouth) Kliegl in Emmetsburg, Iowa. His youth was spent working on the family farm, helping at his dad’s Pavilion/Beach House on Silver Lake, honing his performance skills as a high school cheerleader and enjoying time with his many friends. Family time with relatives was important as life-long friendships were established with his many cousins at reunions and visits.

Enlisting with the Army Air Corps on June 13, 1943, Owen bravely served his country during World War II. His unit supported the European air offensive battles from the Normandy beaches to Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

After the war, Owen returned home and along with his wife, Dolores, raised a family of 5 children. He worked in many fields - auto mechanic, operating a gas station, selling bonds, and finally found his “niche” with Nutrena Feed as a territory sales manager for 23 years and then as the City Clerk for Okoboji, Iowa until his retirement.
After a long illness, Dolores passed away from Alzheimer's disease. A few months later, he met Ginny at a south Texas New Year’s Eve dance. She too had recently lost her husband to illness. The two fell in love at first sight, got married, and began a new phase of their life with trips, cruises, and life in retirement. Their favorite consistent activity was dancing. After many years together, Ginny passed away, and shortly thereafter, Owen moved back to Iowa. His discovery of the dance communities of Prairie Meadows and Lake Robbins has created the many friendships and social life that he loved so much.

Owen was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, having served in most of the officer positions. He has enjoyed many Canadian fishing trips, golfing, playing cards and DANCING!

Owen is survived by his children, sons, Dick Kliegl, Bill (Judy) Kliegl, Ron (Mary Ann) Kliegl, Dean (Sharon) Kliegl, and daughter, Kathy (Dan) Houser; and step-daughters, Linda (Robert) Turner, Judi (George) McCord, and Wendy (Paul) Schroeder. Numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren are part of his family legacy.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Mabel; his wife, Dolores (Schonberger) Kliegl; his four brothers and two sisters; and his second wife, Virginia (Buck) Kliegl.

In Owen’s honor, memorials may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
