Obituary

Paul Darrell Pace, 95, of Des Moines, died at Ramsey Village on November 3, 2013, surrounded by his family. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, November 8 at Iles Westover Chapel. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, November 9 at Glen Echo Christian Church with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at McDivitt Grove Cemetery.

Paul, the son of George and Maude Pace, was born on January 19, 1918 near Massena, and lived on farms at Zion, Macksburg, and Dexter before moving to Des Moines.

Paul had many jobs including working as a "soda jerk" at Reed's Ice Cream Parlor in Des Moines where he met his true love, Lota. They married on November 3, 1940 (this year celebrating 73 years.) Paul enlisted in the Coast Guard at the beginning of World War II and served as a radio operator on the El Paso.

After the war Paul received his teaching degree from Drake and became a teacher for the Des Moines Public Schools. In 1955, he became a principal and served at many schools: Monroe, Howe, Grant, Perkins, Adams, Rice, and retired at Cattell. He founded the Blue Star Children's Safety Program for Des Moines Schools.

Paul and his wife Lota, took in her brother, Marvin's children and raised them as their own. He also provided love and support for his granddaughters and great grandchildren.

Paul loved reading, watching sports (big Hawkeye fan) Saturday nights with Guy Lombardo and Lawrence Welk, playing the piano and ukulele, whistling, going on family vacations, relaxing around his pool, dancing with his wife and enjoying Lota's wonderful cooking.

Paul is survived by his daughters, Linda Shute, Marta (Kenneth) Keiran, and Waneta Dunn; granddaughters, Shana (Bradlee) Bauman, and Kelsey (Shane) Seay; and great grandchildren, Dalton and Presley Marie Bauman; brother, Cecil (Donna) Pace; and sister-in-law, Helen Pace. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Leonard, Earl, Floyd and Lloyd; children, Paul and DeeDee Wells; son-in-law, William Shute and beloved wife, Lota.

Paul's good natured gentleness and humor will be missed by his family. We love you Uncle Paul, Daddy, Grandpa, and Boppy.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.
