Obituary

Paul Joseph Smith, 84, passed away Monday, January 4, 2010 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m., Thursday, January 7, 2010 at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel, with a Rosary and Wake Service at 6 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Friday, January 8, 2010 at St. Ambrose Cathedral, 607 High Street in Des Moines with burial following at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.

Paul was born at home on February 19, 1925 in Grimes, Iowa. He was a six man football state champion. In 1943, after his high school graduation, Paul joined the Army and served until the end of WWII. He was a 1950 graduate of Drake University. Paul was a teacher, principal and coach at Grimes High School. In 1957, Paul started his State Farm Agency and retired in 1993 after 37 years in business.

Paul enjoyed fishing, gardening and golf. He was a Chicago Bears and Cubs fan. He became a loyal Hawkeye fan at the age of 14 after watching Nile Kinnick play. He looked forward to going to Kinnick Stadium each season to cheer on the Hawkeyes. He shared an annual fishing trip each year to Canada with his sons, son-in-laws and friends. He will be missed by his beloved dog, Mozart (a Katrina survivor) and cat, Higgins.

Paul is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Roberta, 'Bobbie'; children, Kathleen (Craig) Metzel of Des Moines, Charles (Grace) Smith of Des Moines, Sheryl (Steven) Hobbs of Grayslake, IL, Paula (Jeff) Tomlinson of Clive and Robert (Lisa) Smith of Clive; grandchildren, Gia, Krystal, April, Lindsey, Brian, Erica, Stefanie, Melissa, Allison, Kelsey, David, Brianna, Elizabeth, Keely, Haley, Nathan, Morey and Henry and twelve great grandchildren.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, James and Cecelia Smith; sisters, Margaret, Helen and Anna Mae; brothers, Donald, Edward, Phillip and Jack and his grandson, David Hobbs.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Ambrose Cathedral, David Hobbs Music Foundation or the Animal Rescue League.
