Paula Maxine Roan, 86, was welcomed into the loving embrace of our God on October 17, 2006 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday at Grace Brethren Church, 305 Hatton in Dallas Center with burial following at Brethren Cemetery.

Paula was born September 16, 1920 in Union County in a stone house in Mt. Pisgah, Iowa, near the Morman Trail. She was the eldest of two daughters born to Jay and Grace Wineinger. Paula was married to Clenn C. Roan on May 13, 1939. Clenn passed away in December of 1987. To this union six children were born: Jerry J. Roan (Angie) of Grimes, Bonita A. “Bonnie” Garnes of Perry, MeLinda E. Griffey of Cedar Rapids, Mary Jo Dawson of Dallas Center, Dixie C. Pickart (Paul) of Johnston and Clenna M. Shepherd of Dallas Center. She had 14 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and a great great grandson due this December.

Before retiring from her teaching career in 1982, Paula was a mentor for many. She started her teaching career at age 17 in a small one room school in Union County (New Hope #8), had a B. A. degree from Drake University and many other honors of recognition. She loved to teach.

Paula was a member of the Grace Brethren Church in Dallas Center. She had many teachers and church members that were close friends. She often entertained in her home and was always there for anyone who needed her.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Clenn; her parents; grand daughter, Dennell Ramos and a son-in-law, Terry Shepherd. She is survived by her sister, Ann Kerns of New Virginia, Iowa; a son and five daughters, grandchildren, and friends and family who will miss her so much.

Visitation will begin after 4:00 p.m., Friday and the family will greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Iles Funeral Homes ~ Brandt Chapel in Dallas Center. Memorial contributions maybe given to the family for a memorial to be established at a later date.
