Pauline Larson Rowe, 88, died Wednesday night, Jan. 5, from complications of leukemia at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.

Pauline was born in Des Moines in the family home at East 13th Street and Euclid Avenue. She was the fifth child of Arvid and Teresia Larson. She was named for her two grandmothers in Sweden. Often when asked her name she would say “Paulina Christina Larsena.”

Pauline was always a busy person. As a teenager she began to sing in the church choir and later she sang solos and duets and was in an organized trio.

Later years found her an active club participant and she served as president of the Des Moines Junior Federation of Women’s Clubs. She also served as national treasurer and then national president of Phi Tau Omega Sorority.

Pauline was a past president for the Woodlawn Elementary School P.T.A. and was a former den mother for the Cub Scouts.

Her employment days consisted of working in the accounting department of an insurance company, receptionist at the YWCA in Cedar Rapids and secretary at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids.

On March 2, 1946, Pauline married George Rowe and they had 49 years together before George died in 1995. Their greatest blessing was the adoption of son, Paul, in 1958.

Pauline’s passions included watching Minnesota Twins baseball, Kansas City Chiefs football and Minnesota Timberwolves basketball as well as men’s and women’s basketball from Iowa, Iowa State and Drake. She enjoyed playing bridge twice a month, attending East High School Alumni Association functions, and caring for the two family golden retrievers. Pauline was a former member of the Women’s International Bowling Congress.

Pauline was a caring woman who dedicated her life to others.

Pauline is survived by her son, Paul, of Des Moines; a brother, Harris Larson of Garland, Texas; a niece, Inez Mathiason of Roseville, Minn.; and three nephews: Dan Quinn of Fort Collins, Colo.; Denis Quinn of Bend, Ore.; and Kent Larson of Webster City. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Westover Funeral Home, 6337 Hickman Road in Des Moines. Memorial contributions can be made Grand View Lutheran Church.
