Peder G. Kitti, 85, died Thursday, April 15, 2004 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital of complications resulting from pneumonia. He had been a resident of Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center for the past three years.

Peder was born in Calumet, Michigan in 1918, the youngest of 13 children of Henry Kitti and Mary Wickstrom Kitti. He studied art at Michigan State University, the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C., the Art Students' League of New York City and the Academic de la Grande Chamiere in Paris, France. He worked for the Interpretive Design Center of the National Park Service, Department of the Interior, as a Supervisory Exhibits Specialist until his retirement.

Peder lived in Arlington, Virginia, with his wife of 49 years, Helen M. Nordling Kitti. After his retirement, Peder and Helen returned to his hometown of Calumet to continue his artistic pursuits.

Peder is survived by his wife, Helen, now of Des Moines; his daughter, Mary Alice (Bruce) Butler of Des Moines; his daughter, Louise (Greg) Smith of Falls Church, Virginia; and four grandchildren, Sidney, Hilary, Rachel and Arthur.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Monday, April 19 at Douglas Avenue Presbyterian Church. Additional services will be held in Calumet, Michigan in early August. Memorial contributions may be made to The Nature Conservancy.
