Obituary

Penelope Kaye (Penny) Harkness, 60, died Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at Hospice Kavanagh House. Penelope Kaye Harkness was the daughter of Sidney and Marcella (Zuroske) Harkness. She was born on March 19, 1948. She graduated from Drake University in Des Moines with a bachelor'sdegree in Fine Arts and went on to earn her master's degree in Art History from Rutgers University in New Jersey. She worked for 26 years as a social worker for the State of Iowa retiring in 2001. She was a member of Mensa and was able to use her ability to speak several languages including Spanish, French, German and Portuguese. She could also translate Latin, Russian and Arabic. Penny used her artistic gifts for painting, gardening, writing and needlework, creating her own embroidery patterns, winning an international prize. She loved animals, especially her dogs Lizzy, Bear, William and Annie.
Penny is survived by her father, Sidney Kay Harkness of Des Moines; sister, Marijane (Garry) Hammond and niece, Caroline Catherine Hammond of St. Joseph, MO; and maternal aunts Mrs. Frances Suggs of Conroe Texas, Mrs. Rita O'Shea of Denver Colorado, several cousins and many special friends.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Animal Rescue League, Animal Lifeline or Hospice of Central Iowa.
