Peter Adrian Palmersheim, 88, died at his home on Monday, October 25, 2004 after a courageous two year battle with cancer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday, October 28 at St. Pius X Church in Urbandale with Msgr. Joseph McDonnell officiating. Interment will be in Glendale Cemetery.

Peter was born on a farm in Howard County near Elma on April 29, 1916 to Peter and Anna (Biwer) Palmersheim. He was a resident of the Des Moines area since 1935. After graduating from Immaculate Conception High School in Elma in 1934, he spent a year in the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) in Cresco. He spent several more years as a civilian employee in the Iowa District Headquarters of the CCC in Des Moines. During this time, Peter spent three years in the Iowa National Guard.

He was an accountant at the Des Moines Ordinance Plant from 1941 to 1946. He retired from Armstrong Rubber in 1978 after a 32 year career in the accounting department, where he was Superintendent of General Accounting. He also ran a home-based income tax service from 1955 until his death.

On April 15, 1939 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Des Moines, Peter was united in marriage to Ellen Green. To this union was born seven children. On January 4, 1992, he was united in marriage to Genevieve (Knox) Freidhof at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma.

Peter was a member of the Accountants Association of Iowa, the National Association of Tax Practitioners and the Institute of Management Accountants. He was also an active parishioner at St. Pius X, a member of the St. Pius Holy Name Society and a Eucharistic Minister.

He is survived by his wife, Genevieve; five daughters, Sue (Phil) Bishop, Sharon (Larry) Sanders, Patti Nutting, all of Des Moines, Sally (Tom) Duer of Runnells and Mary (Terry) Nordstrom of Marshall, MN; two sons, Pete, Jr. of Gig Harbor, WA, and Greg (Kim) of Des Moines; three stepdaughters, Judy (Tom) Henderson of Atlanta, GA, Joanne (Keith) Halverson of Spring Grove, MN, and Terri Thayer of Marion; three stepsons, John Freidhof of Spirit Lake, Leonard (Mollie) Freidhof of Lanark, IL, and Tim (Angela) Freidhof of Osseo, WI; 23 grandchildren; 27 great- grandchildren; twelve step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; his sister, Gertrude Kelly of Charles City; his sister-in-law, Delberta Palmersheim of Elma; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Ellen; two brothers, Mathias and Earl; and three sisters, Christine, Marie, and Esther, who died in infancy.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m at Westover Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services Thursday at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to St. Pius X Catholic Church in Urbandale, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma or Mercy Hospice in Des Moines.
