Obituary

Phyllis Joy (Wildman) Thompson, an unfaltering and indomitable spirit, passed away on April 6, 2025 in Des Moines, IA at the age of 91. She was born to Neal and Iva Wildman on July 6, 1933 in Corwith, Iowa and lived with conviction, undeniable vigorous love for her family and community, and a strong will to leave this world better than she found it. Phyllis was known for her strong faith, a sure foot on the square-dance floor, her farm-girl work ethic, keen mind, as well as a love of music and travel. Phyllis never shied from a challenge whether it be besting everyone in board games or running circles around the boys on the basketball court. She leaves behind a legacy of generosity, quietly steadfast social justice beliefs, and a quick wit.

Phyllis was united in marriage to Raymond Donald Thompson on November 28, 1952 during a snowstorm. They met while roller skating and never stopped moving in unison throughout their 54-year marriage. They welcomed their daughter Debra Rae into their family and loved her with all they had. The family made their home in Atlantic, Iowa for many years where Phyllis worked for First United Methodist Church and then Partner’s Insurance providing administrative support.

Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Debra Bergman; grandson, Andy (Mindy) Olson; granddaughters, Amber (Russ) Sampson, Alisha (Chad) Seger, and Monica Bergman; sister, Jerrill Parham; niece, Michelle Trask; 12 great-grandchildren who all brought out the biggest smile in her, and her wonderful sisters-in-law, Ersel Rushton, Geneva Jessip, Joyce Stringfellow, and Pauline Rodgers.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Neal and Iva (Bogard) Wildman; husband, Raymond Thompson; granddaughter, Danielle Marie; cousins, Karen Hauge, Lyle Meyers and Leonard Meyers; 5 brothers-in-law, and sister-in-law, Genevieve “Gen” Schoon.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, May 17, 2025 at the Corwith Cemetery, Corwith, Iowa. Memorial contributions may be directed to WesleyLife Heritage House (Atlantic) Good Samaritan Fund, 1200 Brookridge Circle, Atlantic, IA. Online condolences are welcome at www.IlesCares.com.

Arrangements by Iles Westover Chapel.
