Prudence Meder Leachman, 75, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at Arbor Springs in West Des Moines. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 30 at The Cathedral Church of St. Paul. Per her wishes her body has been donated to the University of Iowa Medical School.

Prudence was born March 23, 1934 in Elkader, Iowa, the daughter of Ila Oby and Dr. Lloyd Meder. In 1956, she graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor Degree in Education as a Mortar Board Scholar. On June 22, 1957 she was united in marriage to John Leachman in Elkader. Prudence was a teacher in the Des Moines public school system for one year and a life long teacher to her children. She also worked as a legislative assistant in the Iowa Legislature for 10 years. Her passion in life was her family and her volunteer work. She was elected to the Polk County Soil Conservation Service where she served as commissioner from 1976-1997. She served on the boards of Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa and Planned Parenthood Federation of America. Prudence was also a member of the University of Iowa Scottish Highlanders, Delta Delta Delta Sorority, Junior League of Des Moines, Iowa League of Women Voters, Des Moines Herb Study Group and The Cathedral Church of St. Paul.

Prudence was a conservationist and political activist. She also enjoyed antiquing, Hawkeye sports, canoeing, mushroom hunting, gardening, cross country skiing, and she was an avid reader.

Prudence is survived and lovingly remembered by her husband of 52 years, John; children, Sarah Schori of Elgin, IA, John "Jack" Leachman, Jr. and Jennifer Leachman both of Des Moines; two grandchildren, Tyler and Allison Schori; brother, Peter Meder and his wife Virginia and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her son, James.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of Central Iowa or Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa.
