Ralph Dickinson, 87, died Monday, April 13, 2015, of complications following heart surgery. Services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, April 17 at Grace United Methodist Church, 3700 Cottage Grove Avenue, Des Moines.

Born in Oklahoma City, OK on October 22, 1927, Ralph was a proud graduate of the University of Oklahoma and a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity. He served with the Army Engineers during World War II. After college, Ralph worked for Proctor & Gamble for 38 years, beginning his career in Brownwood, Lubbock and Dallas, TX. In 1956, he was transferred to Des Moines, the city that became his family's home.

Ralph was a long-time member of Grace United Methodist Church, Des Moines Golf & Country Club, and the American Heart Association. He was an active volunteer with the Heart Association for over twenty years, serving at the local, state and national levels. He also served as president of the Des Moines Grocery Manufacturers Association.

A few years after retiring from Proctor & Gamble, Ralph started a second career, as the Executive Director of the Des Moines Ronald McDonald House for twelve years.

Ralph was preceded in death by his wife, Eloise, to whom he was married for 54 years. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Warren and Marie, his brothers, Warren and Robert, and his sister, Jo.

Ralph is survived by his daughter, Diane Becker of Des Moines, her three sons, Brad of Baton Rouge, LA, Scott (Jessie) of Charlotte, NC, and John (Beth) with Connor (his great grandchild) of Chicago, IL; his son, Glen (Laurie) of Des Moines, and their three sons, Phillip of Des Moines, Joe of Columbus, OH, and Michael of Chicago, IL; his son, Ross (Mindi), their daughter, Halie, and their son, Charlie; and his dear friend, Peg Buckley.

Ralph, or "Pop" as he was lovingly referred to by his entire family, was known for his heartfelt birthday notes, undisputed memory and his appreciation of Sunday night family dinners. He will always be remembered for his competitive spirit, whether winning $1.00 from his sons on the golf course, or delightfully defeating his grandkids at cards. If Pop was not the score-keeper during a game of 7-Up, he made sure to check the math frequently. After the cards were dealt, Pop would, without fail, lament, "This is the worst hand I have ever had," and then proceed to win.

Pop was loved by all who knew him and he will be greatly missed. He always had a warm smile and a kind heart. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ronald McDonald House, 1441 Pleasant, Des Moines, IA 50314 or to The Des Moines Golf & Country Club Educational Foundation, 1600 Jordan Creek Parkway, West Des Moines, IA 50266.
