Obituary

Ray M. Valentine, 90, of Pleasant Hill died Monday, August 30, 2010 at Kavanagh House Hospice in Des Moines. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, September 3 at St. Mark Episcopal Church of which he was a member. Burial will be at the Altoona Cemetery.

Ray was born in Greene, IA on December 27, 1919 to Ralph and Nora (Sanford) Valentine. He grew up in Eldora and graduated from the Laurens High School. Ray served in the South Pacific with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. While stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC he met Genevieve Register. They were married on January 26, 1946. After completing his military service they returned to Iowa and resided in Iowa Falls. In 1964 they moved to Pleasant Hill. Ray worked for over 25 years at Prestressed Concrete of Iowa retiring as Plant Supervisor in 1984.

Ray was a Golden Gloves and Marine Corps boxer. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, bowling and was an avid 500 player. He loved to make Uncle Ray's Old Fashioned Peanut Brittle, Fudge and Brownies for his church bazaars as well as writing for the St. Mark Church newspaper.

Ray will be remembered for his love of people. He many times opened his home to people in need and was considered a father figure by many. He will be greatly missed.

Ray is survived by his wife of 64 years, Genevieve "Genny" of Pleasant Hill; three sons, foster son, Joseph (Sandy) Register of Valdosta, GA, Melvin (Linda) Valentine of Waterloo and Robert (Lou Ann) Valentine of Pelion, SC; daughter, Susan (Richard) Churchill of Charlotte, NC; nine grandchildren, Wendy Valentine, Kristie Cantu, Lance Valentine, Joe Churchill, Amy Porter, Melinda Valentine Davis, Ryan Valentine, Michael Churchill and Amanda Valentine; 15 great grandchildren; four sisters, Glennis Fallica, Maureen Neessen, Neva Moravec and Marjorie Roy, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Gladys Lavine, Ruth Steely and Avis Nielson and four brothers, Lyle, James, Harold and Gerald Valentine.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Iles Funeral Homes-Grandview Park Chapel where a prayer and memory service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Mark Episcopal Church or Hospice of Central Iowa.
