Obituary

Ray M. Merritt, 93, died May 13, 2011 at Wesley Acres Health Care Center. He was a lifelong resident of Des Moines.

Ray was born in Allerton, Iowa to Dwight and Ada Merritt. He graduated from North High School in 1935 and attended Drake University. While in the Coast Guard and stationed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he married Mary Jane Burke November 4, 1943. After the war, Ray spent his entire working career at Chase Investment Company.

Ray's family was the most important part of his life. His honesty, genuineness, and sense of humor made many friends for him. This would not be complete without mentioning his lifelong love for the game of golf and for the companionship of those with whom he played.

Ray is survived by his daughter, Sandy (Larry) Daniels of Windsor Heights. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and his brother, Maurice Merritt. A private burial will be held at Resthaven Cemetery.

There are not enough words to thank the wonderful staff at Wesley Acres for their kindness, care, and support of both Ray and Mary Jane in the past few years.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wesley Acres Endowment Fund, 3520 Grand, Des Moines, IA; Alzheimer's Association , 1730 28th St., West Des Moines, IA; or Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4114 Allison, Des Moines, IA, where Ray was a 50-year member.
