Obituary

Raymond Joseph Hanrahan, age 85, of Urbandale, Iowa, went to be with his Lord and Savior on November 18, 2007.

Ray was born July 1, 1922 in Des Moines, Iowa to John (J.J.) and Margaret (Irene) Hanrahan. Ray lived in the Des Moines area all of his life. He attended St. Augustin’s School and graduated from Des Moines Roosevelt High School in 1940. He was the all-city baseball pitcher for the City of Des Moines in 1940.

Following high school, Ray served as a fighter pilot during World War II from 1942-1946 with the Army Air Corps 12th Air Force, 57th Fighter Group, 66th Squadron. Most of his service was in Italy, flying P-47 Thunderbolts. He achieved the rank of Lieutenant. After receiving an honorable discharge from the service, Ray studied at Drake University, earning a B.S. in Accounting in 1948 and a Law degree in 1950.

On September 4, 1948, Ray married Alice Mae Paulson of Itasca, Illinois. Following law school, Ray began practicing in Des Moines with the law firm of Hanrahan & Wasker. He served as an Assistant Polk County Attorney and was elected to two terms as the Polk County Attorney from 1956 to 1960. He was also a member of the Iowa State House of Representatives from 1961 to 1962. In 1976 Ray was sworn in as a Polk County District Court judge, serving until he retired on December 31, 1991.

Ray is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Alice, and their children, Jeff, who is an attorney in Houston; Janice, an Information Systems professional in Phoenix, Arizona; and Roxanne Antisdel, an elementary school teacher in Des Moines and her husband, Kirby. Ray is also survived by his brothers, Vince Hanrahan of Des Moines; John Hanrahan of Houston, Texas; and his sisters Rosemary Leahy of Overland Park, Kansas and Virginia Kinney of West Des Moines. Ray has two grandchildren, Victoria and Patrick Hanrahan of Houston, Texas.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, November 20th from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Iles Funeral Homes - Westover Chapel, 6337 Hickman Road, Des Moines, Iowa. The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 21st at Westover Chapel, followed by interment at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., F. 17, Chicago, IL 60601-7633.
