Obituary

Raymond Richard Rothfus, 88, was ushered into the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Saturday morning, July 30, 2022. He was born on July 20, 1934, in Levy, Iowa. Ray was the son of Richard and Wilma Rothfus.

Ray’s early education was in one-room schools, ending in Watts school; his 8th grade graduation was from rural Polk Co. in Allen Township, where he was a member of 4-H. After graduating in 1951 from Lincoln High School in Des Moines, he attended Iowa State University, graduating with a degree in Education. Ray was a lifelong ISU fan who loved to cheer for the Cyclones. He also enjoyed the Chicago Cubs baseball team.

Ray served his country in the United States Army in Stuttgart, Germany during the Korean conflict, receiving an honorable discharge in September 1956. He married Elizabeth (Betty) Howe in 1957. They were married forty-one years and were blessed with four children. After Betty’s passing, Ray married Corrine Edwards in 1999 and welcomed two step-daughters to his family. Ray and Corrine were married nearly 23 years.

Ray worked as a draftsman for his entire career, working at Cherry Burrell in Cedar Rapids, Maytag in Newton, and Townsend Engineering in Des Moines, from where he retired in July, 1999. He was a regular blood donor, and was very pleased to have reached the two-gallon mark.

Ray was a follower of Jesus Christ and was dedicated to serving Him. Ray served as a Sunday School teacher and Deacon at church for many years. He was an active member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Newton, Missionary Baptist Church in Carlisle, and Fellowship Baptist Church in Des Moines. Ray loved to sing in the choir and the men’s quartet, and just retired from choir last year. He enjoyed reading, watching sports and news, exercising, sunsets, long walks, and working out all of his life.

Ray is survived by his wife, Corrine; his sister, Rosemary Bishop; daughters, Cathy (Doug) Dutter, Amy (Randy) Cole, and Cindy (Jim) Barkema; step-daughters, Anne (Travis) Yossett, and Jennie Edwards; grandchildren, Jessica (Josh) Parker, Katie (Zach) Sable, Joshua Barkema, Jacob Barkema; step-grandchildren, Bailey Paskert, Asher and Jackson Yossett; great-grandchildren, Lucy and James Parker; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews, and friends.

Ray was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Rothfus; son, Paul Rothfus; parents, Richard and Wilma Rothfus; mother-in-law, Ethyl Howe; brother, David Rothfus, and brother-in-law, Jerry Bishop.
