Raymond L. Thompson, 72, died of complications of an intracranial hemorrhage on Tuesday, February 7, 2006, at Iowa Health Hospice Taylor House. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 11, at Iles Funeral Homes-Grandview Park Chapel, 3211 Hubbell Avenue, Des Moines, IA.

Raymond was born in Colfax, IA on January 10, 1934 to William and Gertrude (Ward) Thompson. He graduated from Colfax High School, then worked for Maytag Company in Newton before being drafted into the U.S. Army for two years of service in Germany. After returning from Germany, Raymond worked at Vernon's Novelty Company in Newton and farmed in Jasper County for many years. During this time, he also owned the Trading Post Bar in Mingo. He retired from farming 16 years ago when he moved to Pleasant Hill and worked for Artistic Manufacturing in Altoona. He was a 23-year member of the Elks Lodge and enjoyed spending winters at the Leisure World Community of Weslaco, TX. He will be remembered as a man who enjoyed visiting with people and spent time visiting the elderly and sick. He loved being with his family and grandchildren.

Raymond is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marilyn (Iske) Thompson; two sons, Rusty (Sandy) Thompson of Pleasant Hill and Jay (Jeri) Thompson of Smithville, MO; and six grandchildren, Natalie, Stephanie, Cody, Luren, Kristen, and Travis.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be directed to Iowa Health Hospice Taylor House.
