Obituary

Ret. Lt. Col. Michael Terrence “Terry” Lipovac, 80, passed away from this life on Friday, January 21, 2022 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Des Moines. Services will be held on Friday, January 28, 2022 at St. Mary of Nazareth Catholic Church, 4600 Meredith Drive, Des Moines, with visitation from 9:30-10:30am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30am. Interment will be at 12:30pm, Friday January 28, 2022 at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery.

Terry was born April 21, 1941 in Des Moines to Vance and Ruby Lipovac. He was a graduate of Dowling High School. He also attended Wentworth Military Academy, Drake University, and University of Maryland. He began his US Army military career in 1962 and fought in the Vietnam War. He married the love of his life, Sonja Ann Taft on July 2, 1962 in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. To this union, three children were born, Maria, Vance and Brian. During his military career he resided in 16 different homes in 12 US States and two foreign countries.

Terry was a member of St. Mary of Nazareth Catholic Church. He was well known amongst many veteran agencies and was always eager to help a fellow veteran. He was a very giving man, whether it be to family or a stranger. He had a big heart, especially when it came to family. He could make new friends where ever he went. He is loved by many and will be greatly missed.

Terry is survived by his children, Maria Lipovac, Vance Lipovac and Brian (Stephany) Lipovac all of Des Moines; siblings, Alma Guthrie of Englewood, CO, Paula Reding of Castle Pines, CO and Joel Lipovac of Denver, CO; three granddaughters, Ashley Fuller of Des Moines, Katelyn (Sean) Bovinett of Dexter and Adison Lipovac of Des Moines; seven great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 53 years, Sonja and one great granddaughter, Isla Briann Tongo-Lipovac.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family. For those unable to attend, the Mass will be live streamed. A link will appear on Terry’s obituary page, just prior to the service, at www.IlesCares.com, where you may also leave online condolences.

Arrangements by Iles Westover Chapel.
