Richard Toran Obituary

Richard Toran died peacefully on Saturday, May 10 in Plymouth, Massachusetts due to complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

Rick was born on July 30, 1952, to William and Sylvia Toran in Des Moines, Iowa where had an idyllic childhood. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1974 with a Bachelor of Business Administration. Rick earned his CPA certification shortly thereafter and began his career in accounting at Peat, Marwick, Mitchell. Later he moved to managing capital and real estate at a family office where he worked for nearly 40 years.

In 1987, Rick and his family followed his firm to the east coast and relocated to Potomac, Maryland. He spent the next three decades there raising his two daughters with his wife, Shelly. Rick was an avid golfer, a diehard fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and Washington D.C.-area sports teams, and a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. Above all, he was kind.

Rick will be dearly missed and forever loved by his wife of 50 years; their children, Julie Toran (Chris Cost) and Rachel (Josh) Towbin; his grandchildren, Andrew and Libby Cost and Micah Towbin; and his sister, Carole Kucharo. His passing was preceded by his mother and father.

Services will be held on May 14 at 10 am at Glendale Masonic Cemetery in Des Moines, 4909 University Avenue. A luncheon and celebration of life will be held immediately following at Tifereth Israel Synagogue at 924 Polk Boulevard.
