Obituary

Richard Dennis Campbell lost his courageous battle with lung cancer and passed away peacefully at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines on November 13th, 2008. At his request, he was cremated. Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, November 17th at Assumption Catholic Church in Granger. Inurnment will follow at the Beaver Catholic Cemetery in Granger, Iowa.

Richard was born December 31, 1941, in Guthrie Center, IA., the first of three sons of Ruby (Ely, Roberts) and Frank Campbell. He spent his youth in Guthrie Center attending public schools and working the family farm. He graduated from Guthrie Center High In 1960 and was active In the FFA.

Richard met his future wife Kathryn Joan Seeman at the local Guthrie Center Dime Store where she worked as a clerk during the summer. Richard and Kathryn were married on July 6th, 1963 at Assumption Catholic Church, Granger, IA. Richard and Kathryn settled in Granger, IA and raised three sons; Mark, Tim and Mike. Together they celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary this past summer.

Following High School, Richard worked as an apprentice learning the plumbing trade and enlisted In the Iowa National Guard, Core of Engineers, where he attained the rank of 2nd lieutenant. Richard also spent a number of years working in manufacturing at both Link-Belt Equipment and Firestone. After leaving Firestone, Richard owned and operated Granger Construction, specializing in plumbing and excavation. Later Richard owned and operated a long-haul trucking company, operating routes between Iowa and the west coast for over 20 years. Richard retired from trucking in 2005.

Richard delighted in spending time with his family. He loved the annual fishing trip to Clear Lake with his grandchildren Samantha, Garrett and Emma, as well as the annual family camping trip to Lake Rathbun. He took great pride in watching Garrett's football games and Emma's soccer matches. This past year Richard experienced many special moments with his family. He saw his youngest son, Mike, graduate from Mercy School of Nursing and his oldest granddaughter graduate from High School in Tonganoxie, Kansas. In early October he and Kathryn traveled to Lake of the Woods and went on a guided walleye fishing trip. Richard had a great time and was ready to go again.

He is survived by his loving wife, Kathryn; his mother, Ruby; three sons and their wives, Mark and Francie, Tim and Dee, and Mike and Lisa; three grandchildren Samantha, Garrett and Emma and two brothers Larry and Keith. He was preceded in death by his father in 1972.

Family will greet friends from 2:00 to 4:00 pm on Sunday at Assumption Catholic Church in Granger with a Vigil Service held at 3:00 pm. Memorial contributions can be made to Assumption Catholic Church.
