Obituary

Richard (Dick) Rice, of Ankeny, died July 5, 2011 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center of pulmonary fibrosis at the age of 72.

Dick and his twin brother were born September 23, 1936 at home in Union County, Iowa. His parents were Ivan Dean Rice and Irma Wilmont Johnson. During his youth, Dick lived with his family in Nevinville, Rolfe, Pocahontas, and moved to Cedar Falls following the death of his father in 1953. He graduated from Teacher's College High School in 1956. He attended Iowa State Teacher's College for one year and then went to work for Hoxie Fruit Co. in Waterloo, Iowa for one year. In August of 1958 he went on a blind date with Mary Ann Dexter of Waterloo. They had a two year long distance courtship while he attended Dunwoody Technology College in Minneapolis, MN. Following his graduation from Dunwoody with a degree in auto mechanics, he and Mary Ann were married at the First Methodist Church in Waterloo on June 24, 1960. Dick worked for Rasmussen Chevrolet in Cedar Falls for two years and then decided to return to college. He graduated from State College of Iowa (UNI) with a degree in marketing in 1966. He went to work for Sunray DX. During that time, the family lived in Waukesha, WI, Ft. Dodge and Des Moines. In 1978 Dick and his partner formed Diamond Oil Co., a bulk distributor of petroleum products in Des Moines. They had bulk plants in Adel, Perry, Guthrie Center, Newton and Oskaloosa as well as several E-Z Mart convenience stores. In September of 1997, Dick sold his share of the company and retired.

Dick served on the Petroleum Marketers of Iowa Board from 1993-1998. He served on nearly every committee at his church, many times as chairman. He received the greatest joy from serving as head usher for 36 years. He loved greeting people and never forgot a name or a face.

Dick enjoyed woodworking, working in his yard, doing crossword puzzles, playing free cell on his computer and, with his wife and friends, going on antique hunting trips. The best times of all for him were spent with his family.

Dick is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Ann, daughter Kristi (Bill) Tomlinson of Ankeny, son Bill (Julie) Rice of Des Moines, granddaughters Lindsey Tomlinson (Adam Good) of Ankeny and Katie Tomlinson, of Ankeny, grandson Max Rice of Des Moines and granddaughter Jane Rice of Des Moines, his brother Dr. Ronald M Rice of Des Moines and several nieces and nephews. Dick was preceded in death by his parents Ivan Rice & Irma Rice Eden and his twin brother Dr. Robert C. Rice.

Visitation will be Sunday from 3:00 - 6:00 at New Hope United Methodist Church, 4525 Beaver Ave., Des Moines. Memorial services will be Monday at 11:00 am at the same location. Burial of his ashes will be at Ridgedale Cemetery in Johnston following a luncheon at the church after the service.
