Obituary

Richard (Dick) William Witt, 94 of Urbandale Iowa, passed away Thursday, June 23, 2022, at Deerfield Senior Living.

Dick was born April 5, 1928, in St. Louis, MO to William Clay and Olinda (Wehmeyer) Witt. He attended Cleveland High School and was a stand-out football player for the Cleveland Dutchmen. Dick met Lois Ann Asher at Cleveland High School and they were married on October 22, 1949, at The Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in St. Louis. Dick and Lois celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary prior to Lois’ passing in 2020. They were blessed with 3 children: Jerry, David, and Barb.

Dick enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and served courageously during the Korean War as a forward observer. Following his service in the Marines, he went to work for Sinclair Oil Company and was transferred to Kansas City, MO and a short time later, Des Moines, Iowa.

In 1962, Dick made a career change and went to work for ILC Resources (Iowa Limestone Company) and in 1980, became President and CEO. Dick was an outstanding leader and responsible for much of ILC Resources early growth. Dick was very proud of the team of people he worked with and what they accomplished during the 45 years he worked at ILC.

When Dick was not working, he enjoyed his involvement with the Rotary Club of Northwest Des Moines, where he served in many leadership capacities.

Dick and Lois were Charter Members of Faith Lutheran Church and they were very active in supporting the growth at Faith. In addition, Dick enjoyed spending time with family and friends at their lake home on Lake Panorama and winters at their condo on Marco Island, FL. Dick enjoyed playing golf, horseshoes, and boating.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Lois, son David, and daughter Barb.

Survivors include son, Jerry, and his wife Sally, eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren, brother-in-law Gary Asher and his wife Glenda. The family would like to thank his caregivers at Deerfield who enriched his life after Lois’ passing. We also want to thank Hospice of the Midwest for their loving care in his last few months.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 7, 2022 beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Clive. Services begin at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at McDivitt Grove Cemetery in Urbandale. Memorials may be directed to Faith Lutheran Church.
