Richard Dawson Obituary

Richard James Dawson was called home on September 4, 2024, after a final bout of pneumonia at the Des Moines VA Medical Center. He was born on June 6, 1949 in Des Moines, Iowa, to Glen Gerald Dawson and Mary Louise (Mihalovich) Dawson.

Richard graduated from Southeast Polk High School in 1967 and went on to serve in the United States Navy. In his youth Richard enjoyed watching game shows and movies and hanging with his friends. In 2010 Richard moved to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown where he enjoyed the campus ambiance. Music was always special to Richard and he loved sharing his deep baritone voice. He was quick to share a peace sign with friends and wish them a “groovy” day.

Surviving Richard are his brothers, Tom (Hue) Dawson, John (Connie) Dawson, Larry (Kathy) Dawson, nephews Eric (Regan) Dawson, Tyler (Missy) Dawson, Neal Dawson, Marcus (Lindsey) Dawson, nieces Kara (Matt) Holeman, Tesi (Zach) Klipsch, Katie (Cody) Bertran, Kelsie (Neil) Matthias and several great nephews and nieces.

Preceding him in death were his parents Glen and Mary Dawson.

Visitation will be at Grandview Park Funeral Home, 3211 Hubbell Avenue, at 9:30 am on Friday, September 6, 2024 with burial at 11:00 at the Sunset Memorial Cemetery, 7601 Fleur Drive, Des Moines.
