Obituary

Richard L. Gaynor passed peacefully on December 12, 2008. Memorial services will be held at 1 pm, Friday, December 19 at Oakwood United Methodist Church in Pleasant Hill, Iowa. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 pm, Thursday, December 18 at Iles Funeral Homes - Grandview Park Chapel.

Richard was born to Pete and Naomi Gaynor on May 8, 1925 in Fayette, Iowa. He joined the Navy, then studied at Upper Iowa University, later re-enlisting in the Army. He proudly served in the military for 21 years and was active in WWII and the Korean War. He was awarded numerous awards and decorations for his service, including a Purple Heart. Twenty-six years later, he retired from the State of Iowa as State Radiologist.

Richard loved to travel and served with the Friendship Force for several years. He was a member of VFW Post #738 and the Oakwood United Methodist Church. Richard was a giving man, believing in helping others to help themselves. He loved to putter and create unique inventions. He was a cherished Grandfather and Great Grandfather who fully enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially the children, best known as "his babies".

Surviving are his loving wife, Tamma Jo (Crosley) Gaynor of Eldora, IA; sister, Lavon Becker of Cedar Falls, IA; brother, Mike Gaynor; four children with extended families: Rick Gaynor of Arlington, WA; Pat Benge of Britt, IA, Kate Bason of St. Charles, IA and Bill Gaynor of Des Moines, IA; seven Grandchildren and six Great Grandchildren. Grandpa, we will miss you and keep you in our hearts forever. You will always be with us.
