Obituary

In Loving Memory of Richard Russell Whiton
July 3, 1945, to August 31, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard (Dick) Whiton, who left us on August 31, 2025, at the age of 80. He was a beloved brother, father, cousin, neighbor, colleague, friend, and confidant whose warmth and kindness touched the lives of many.

Born on July 3, 1945, Dick grew up on his family’s farm near Perry, Iowa with a passion for farming that never left him. He graduated from Perry High School and later from Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa with a degree in Business. After college Dick worked for Timmons, Kroll and Jacobsen, LLP, a CPA firm in Des Moines, for essentially his entire career until retirement. Dick’s hobbies included golf, motorcycles, playing his saxophone, mowing his lawn and clearing snow with his John Deere riding lawnmower, woodworking, volunteering at the Iowa State Fair, western dancing, gardening and serving in the Beaverdale Acanthus Masonic Lodge #632 for over 50 years and treasurer for many of those years. He was also a 50 year member of the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine. All who knew him will always remember his deep, loud voice, his infectious laughter, and his generous spirit to help friends, neighbors and lodge brothers.

Dick is survived by his brother, Bob (Linda) of Newport Beach, CA; his sons, Rich (Dawn) of Blackwood, NJ, Rod (Jeanine) of Ringoes, NJ, and Randy (Veronica) of Las Vegas, NV; his cousins and his countless friends who were fortunate to share in his journey.

A celebration of life will be held at 10:00 a.m., on September 27, 2025, at Iles Westover Chapel, 6337 Hickman Road, Des Moines, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m., one hour prior to the service. All who knew and loved Dick are welcome to attend and share memories.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children (Shriners Children's) and Parkinson’s Disease Foundation. Online condolences are welcome at www.IlesCares.com.

Dick may be gone from our sight, but his memory will live on in our hearts forever.

Arrangements by Iles Westover Chapel.
