Richard Lee Vohs, 71, of Johnston, IA, passed away Monday, January 29, 2018. He died peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family.

Richard was born November 19, 1946, in Fort Dodge, IA, son of John and Lorraine (Matthys) Vohs. He received his education in Fort Dodge, graduating from St. Edmonds High School in 1964. He then entered into the United States Army, serving his country during the Vietnam War and continuing his service. He proudly served his country for 20 years and was honorably discharged. He received many medals and awards throughout his military career. While in the service, he completed an Associate of Arts degree with Campbell University.

On November 27, 1965, he was united in marriage to Teresa Hruska. They made their home during those twenty years throughout the United States and overseas. They have been living in the Des Moines area for the past 18 years.

Richard was a huge baseball fan. For the past eight years, he worked for a private baseball statistics company that keep score for the Iowa Cubs. He enjoyed following the Chicago Cubs, Atlanta Braves, and Chicago White Sox. He watched as many games as he could, either on television or in person. He shared his passion for the game with his family. He always knew when the season was going to start, making sure to let his family know how many days were left until the start of spring training.

Richard enjoyed several different genres of music, Blues being his favorite. He spent hours with his family listening to and enjoying music together. Some of his favorites memories were of the Blues concerts that he attended with his two sons.

He is survived by his wife Teresa, his mother Lorraine of Austin, TX, five children; Lance (Michele) Vohs of Urbandale, Julie (Eric) Reese of McKinney, TX, Derek (Lisa) Vohs of Thor, IA, Kelly Vohs of Johnston and Cathy (Daniel) Bauman of Grimes, IA, 10 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren two brothers; Robert and Jay Vohs and a sister, Diane Dennis.

Interment and Military Rites will be held 2:00 p.m. on April 20, 2018 at at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel for friends and family.
