Obituary

Rick Hutcheson of Grimes Iowa, born April 7, 1949 passed away at 74 years of age on August 28, 2023 due to combination of heart, lung, and kidney illnesses. It took place in his favorite place in the world, his shop in the garage with his son Squire at his side and his daughter Samantha waiting for him having passed in 2021. He is survived by his mother Marie, sister Vick, brother Mick, and Grandchildren James, Dominic, and Logan.

After returning from serving in Vietnam in 1970 for the Army, he made an impact on in the town at every turn. From starting a grocery store on his own which later became the Caseys store to adding an ice cream shop right next door so people had a place to go in the small town and eat some frozen dessert while the kids played arcade games. And further helping the community by making the building which became the town’s laundromat so people wouldn’t have to drive to another town to wash their clothes.

He also helping to form a local JC’s chapter, and membership in many local groups like the American Legion, Grimes Lions Club, the Chamber of Commerce, assisting in starting the city Centennial event and annual Funtastic Days (later to be renamed Governors Days). He became Scout Leader for the Boy Scouts of Grimes for a number of years. He was a member and treasurer of the Vittoria Italiana Lodge.

He was a spearhead in creating the local Rescue Unit and getting the city its first ambulance after his own father, Jim Hutcheson, passed. Then spent 18 years as an EMT, 32 years on the Volunteer Fire Department (13 of those as Fire Chief). After leaving Grimes Fire and Rescue he joined Granger and became fire chief there for 9 more years. During all that and after he would help train new generations of fire fighters across Iowa at training burns and is a well-recognized name among them.

His treasure is the Veterans/Fire/Police Memorial in Grimes that he established himself in 2015. As such any donations will be given to the Grimes Fire and Rescue that returned the help in his time of need.
Services will be held on Friday, September 1, 2023 at the Iles Brandt Chapel in Dallas Center, IA. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Sunny Hill Cemetery in Grimes.
