Riley Harry Richards passed away on January 30, 2007, at age 94. Born in North Judson, Indiana, on October 6, 1912, he was the son of Harry J. and Chestie (Johnson) Richards. Riley graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1934, and received his MBA from Harvard University in 1937. A chartered financial analyst, he worked for Savings Bank Trust Company in New York City, the Security and Exchange Commission in Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia, and U.S. Steel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1945, Riley and his wife Eloise moved to Des Moines where he joined Equitable Life Insurance Company Iowa as Superintendent of Bonds subsequently advancing to vice president of finance, vice president secretary-treasurer, senior vice president-treasurer and director, member of the executive committee of Equitable of Iowa Companies until his retirement in 1984.

His numerous volunteer activities included board membership of Presbyterian Westminster House, Inc. and the F.M. Hubbell Sons & Company. He also served on the Des Moines Plan and Zoning Commission, was trustee and chairman of the United Presbyterian Foundation, and was on the board of regents of Life Officers Investment Seminar. Riley was trustee of the Thompson Trust and the Frederick M. Hubbell Estate, a member of County Life Insurance, and president of the Iowa Society of Financial Analysts. He was a member of the Embassy Club, Masons, Rotary Club of Des Moines, and Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

Riley is survived by his wife of 66 years, Eloise Quinn Richards; son, Roy (Gloria) Richards of Clive, Iowa; daughter, Lynne (Bruce) Beck of Lake Elmo, Minnesota; and grandchildren, Emily (Jon) Cogburn, Geoffrey Richards, Brian (Angela) Beck and Lauren Beck. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Naval Lt. Kristen Richards and sister, Ila Chamberlin.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, February 5, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4114 Allison Avenue at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Westminster Presbyterian Church or the Rotary Foundation.
