Obituary

Rimma Grigoryevna Obuhovskaya (Riva Obukhovsky), 85, passed away early Sunday morning, March 15, 2015 at Taylor Hospice House.

Rimma was born in Kiev, Ukraine on August 28, 1929 to Olga and Grigoriy Obuhovsky. She had a happy childhood growing up Kiev surrounded by her parents, brother, Abram, and many extended family members. Her childhood was halted by the onset of World War II in 1941. She evacuated Ukraine with her mother, aunt, and cousin to a remote region of eastern Russia to escape the advancing German forces & lost her mother along the way on a refugee train. Her father & brother were killed in battle during the war orphaning her at the young age of 12.

Rimma loved to dance, read, cook, sew, & spend time with family and friends. She always dreamed of traveling the world but never had the means to make it happen. She married her husband, Yakov Wayman, on November 6, 1952 & they shared 35 years of marriage together. She gave birth to her only child, her son, Gregory in 1953. She gave unwavering companionship and loyalty to her family throughout her life. She was the most loving and devoted mother.

She loved spending time with their large extended family & hosting family gatherings. Her family didn't have a TV or telephone at the time so they enjoyed spending time together playing board games such as Lotto & dominoes. During large family celebrations, she always enjoyed being the head cook & would prepare a large abundance of delicious dishes, but enough to feed an army because her heart felt full when everyone was fed.

Rimma lost her husband, Yakov, after his long & difficult battle with a terminal illness in 1988.

Rimma worked for many years as a Head Accountant for a real estate management organization until her retirement in 1985 in order to help care for her newborn granddaughter, Julia.

Her family emigrated from Kiev, Ukraine to West Des Moines, Iowa in the United States on June 29, 1992 to begin a new chapter of life. She loved being a part of & caring for her family as one of two matriarchs. She spent many years helping raise her granddaughter and the family pup, Lily. Even as her health worsened with time, not allowing her to travel, she truly enjoyed picnics and fishing at the lake with her family & spending time outdoors. Family was always the most important element of her life and she was very devoted to the ones she loved most.

Rimma is survived by her son, Gregory Obukhovsky, daughter-in-law, Irina Obukhovsky, granddaughter, Julia Shebarshov, & grandson-in-law, Vas Shebarshov.

She was preceded in death by her husband, mother, father, and brother, Abram.
