Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 10, at Windsor Presbyterian Church, 6301 University Avenue. Burial at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines will follow a reception.

Robert was born June 6, 1921 in Des Moines to William and Grace Baldwin. Growing up on Des Moines' east side, he graduated valedictorian from East High School in December 1938. He went on to Drake University studying journalism for two years and then enlisted in the United States Army serving from 1941 to 1945.

While stationed in England during World War II, he met and married Sheila Brookes in Sheffield, England on October 13, 1945. They returned to Des Moines and enjoyed 59 years of marriage together and raised two sons Michael and Mark.

Robert returned to Drake to complete his journalism degree, during which time he served as editor of Drake's student newspaper, The Times- Delphic. Upon graduation he worked as a reporter for United Press International covering statehouse and Iowa news from the Des Moines bureau office. He moved into advertising and worked for more than a decade at Fairall Advertising as an account executive and later as the firm's president. His love for Drake and education kept calling him and he returned to his alma mater where he served as alumni director. Four years later, the Des Moines School District tabbed him to oversee school community relations and for the next 13 years he served as the district's public relations director, retiring in 1985.

A devoted member of Windsor Presbyterian Church, Robert belonged for more than 50 years, serving on numerous committees and church boards, teaching Sunday school, and representing Windsor on several district and statewide church committees.

He remained very active in retirement with many organizations. He served several years as editor of the East High Alumni newsletter, as a regional director for AARP in Iowa, was a member of the Des Moines School District's Retired Teachers Association and of Walnut Creek YMCA. He also was an avid golfer, and ardent fan of the New York Yankees and Green Bay Packers.

Robert is survived by his brother Richard (Kathleen) of Sacramento, Calif.; two sons Michael (Linda) of Johnston, and Mark (Susan) of Urbandale, four grandchildren: Ryan (Heidi); Whitney, Sarah and David and niece Lois (Gary) Larson. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Sheila, his parents and two brothers George and Harry.

To honor his life and memory, memorials may be made to Windsor Presbyterian Church.
