Robert E. "Bob" Hanson, 72, passed away, peacefully after a long battle with cancer, Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 9:30am, Friday, August 7 at Iles Funeral Homes – Grandview Park Chapel. Burial will be at the Cassel Cemetery, Madrid, IA. His family will receive friends from 6-8pm, Thursday, August 6, 2009 at the funeral home.

Robert Eugene Hanson was born August 25, 1936 in Story City, Iowa the son of Myrtle Johnson and Elmer Hanson. He grew up in Story City, Iowa. Bob enlisted in the US Army, where he faithfully served his country from 1955 – 1957. Following the service Bob attended Iowa State for two years and on October 21, 1968 he was united in marriage to Nancy Kay Seiler in Madrid. They moved to Jefferson, where Bob ran a service station and in the early 1980's they moved to Des Moines. Bob worked as a clerk, for 20 years, for the US postal service at the main post office, until his retirement in 2002. Bob was a hard worker and even in his retirement continued working with landscaping, performing contract mail services and working on cars. He was a very sociable person, who never met a stranger and was always willing to help others in need. He also enjoyed bird watching.

Bob is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Nancy; sons, Kent R. Hanson of West Des Moines and Kyle W. (Raian) Hanson of Pleasant Hill; daughter, Karissa L. Hanson of Minneapolis; granddaughters, Lauryn and Hailey Hanson; sister, Marjorie E. (Gerald "Pete") Ogren of Des Moines; two aunts, nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Kristine A. Hanson.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society or the Food Bank of Iowa.
