Robert "Bob" Eckardt died after a five month battle with cancer at Kavanagh Grand Hospice after leaving his home on 45th Street just a few days ago.

Bob was born in Madison County on April 11, 1930 to Gertrude Estell Eckardt and Lloyd Eckardt. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He and Marianne were married June 4, 1954. They had made their home in Des Moines since 1956 where graduated from Drake University, did insurance underwriting and had Eckardt Insurance Agency until retirement in 1990. Recently he was a part-time driver for NeighborCare, delivering medications to nursing homes. He enjoyed driving and traveling, gathering Greenfield relatives together for frequent reunions, playing pinochle and bridge, watching sport events on TV (and Dr. Phil) and country music. He was a member of the Methodist Church, the American Legion and VFW.

Bob is survived by his wife, Marianne Staley Eckardt and his special little white poodle, Pucci. Also surviving are his sister, Shirley Rice of Murray and his brother, Dean (Carolyn) of Ankeny; niece, Lori (Randy) Burchett and nephews, Steve Eckardt, Scott (Chris) Eckardt, Brad, Bret, Mark (Jill) and Mike Rice and their children; aunts, uncles and cousins; and two special cousins, Earl (Kathy) Estell and family of Norwalk and J.D. McCoy (Donna) and family of Buena Park, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Larry Rice.

A memorial service to celebrate Bob's life will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Westover Funeral Home, followed by a luncheon from 4 to 6 p.m., also at Westover. Cremains will be cared for by his family at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Bob's name to InTrust Hospice or Kavanagh Grand Hospice or the family.
