Robert “Bob” Eugene Mason, 77, passed away Saturday, August 21, 2021, in the comfort of his home in Des Moines, IA. A graveside service will be held at 2:00PM on Wednesday, September 1, 2021, at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel.

Bob was born September 22, 1943. After high school graduation, he enlisted with the United States Army and served his country in the Vietnam War. He served dutifully until his honorable discharge after nine years of service. Bob was also proud of his status as a Freemason and Shriner.

Bob was an ordained minister, and particularly enjoyed presiding over marriage ceremonies. He will be particularly remembered for his title as “Chili Bob”, entering the chili contest at the Iowa State Fair every year. He liked to go fishing and boating, never feeling comfortable without having ownership over a boat, even if it was just sitting in his driveway after he could no longer bring it out on the water. And whether it was on the water, or at his favorite tavern Bob loved to crack open an ice cold Miller Lite.

Bob is survived by his children, Christopher Mason, Shan Crawford, and Jeff Mason; siblings, Karen, Pat, Linda, Sharon, Sandy, Christy, David, Gary, Tommy, and Walt "Buttons" Mason, Jr.; and two grandchildren, Linsay Jackson, and Crystal Lamont. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Fouts; father, Albert Schlarbaum; stepfather, Walter Mason; siblings, Kathy, Mickey, and Randy; and twin grandsons, Troy Steel and Joshua Robert Mason.

In Bob’s honor, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
