Obituary

Robert F. Holz, Sr. 88, of Des Moines died Saturday night, August 11, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Bob was born in Dubuque on March 31, 1919. On October 3, 1940, he married Dolores (Laurie) Sigwarth in Dubuque. They had three sons, Bob Jr. (Sharon) of Des Moines, Cary (Jan) of Burnsville, Minnesota, and Chuck (Mary) of Nipomo, California. Cary died in 2004.

Bob was proud of his service in World War II, serving in the Navy aboard an LST in the Pacific Theatre.

He was the manager of Rhomberg Furs in Dubuque for nearly twenty-five years before he moved to Des Moines in 1963 to become manager of the Younkers fur departments. He retired from Younkers in 1984. Since then he followed the activities of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, played golf until a number of years ago, played bridge on Wednesdays until he went into the hospital and faithfully cheered on his lifetime favorite Cubs, watching or listening to most games.

He was preceded in death by his brothers Bill of Arizona and Carl of California as well as his son Cary. He is survived by his wife and two sons, grandchildren Christi (Mike) Emerson of West Des Moines, Kim (Jeff) Johnson of Boone, Jim (Missy) Holz of Dubuque, Cathy (Dale) Brown of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Tom Holz, living in Vietnam, Ted (Jodi) Holz of Pensacola, Florida, Sarah (Shawn) Vanderbeck of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Charlie Holz of Los Osos, California and thirteen great-grandchildren as well as his sister Virginia (Sis) Spechtenhauser of Oregon.
