Obituary

Robert Henry Lubetkin, 87, died on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at Scottish Rite Park in Des Moines. He was born June 4, 1925 in Mt. Vernon, New York, the son of Milton and Helen (Frankel) Lubetkin.

Robert graduated from Hollywood High School, Los Angeles, CA, and then volunteered to serve in the U.S. Army in World War II. He was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. After completing his engineering studies at the University of Southern California, he moved to Des Moines in 1948, where he commenced a long career in management positions at Younkers department store.

He led many community organizations, serving as President and trustee of the Des Moines Art Center, President of Temple B'nai Jeshurun, and President of Des Moines Planned Parenthood. Until shortly before his death, he was active in the Century Club, a group of active stock market investors and students of the market, over which he once presided and through which he found friendship and intellectual stimulation.

A proud citizen of Des Moines and Iowa, Robert led and participated in boards and organizations that supported Iowa Public Television, the Development Commission for the Eastside of Downtown Des Moines, and the beautification of the Iowa State Fairgrounds. He also enjoyed teaching at the Des Moines Area Community College, as an adjunct at Drake University, and as a docent at the Des Moines Art Center.

Robert and his wife, Harriette, were passionate collectors and travelers. He was proud of having visited well over 90 different countries, and they were recognized as experts in certain collecting circles.

His first marriage, to Betty (Rosenberg Hiller), ended in divorce. Robert is survived by his wife, Harriette (Valentine), his sons, Paul (Joyce) of Lexington, MA and Andrew (Janet) of Winnetka, IL, and three grandchildren, Jacob, Abe, and Molly, and his sister Jean Harris of Reno, NV.

Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Monday, June 3, 2013 at Temple B'nai Jeshurun, 5101 Grand Avenue, Des Moines. The family will greet friends at Temple B'nai Jeshurun following the funeral.
