Robert J. DeLay, 82, died September 10, 2010 of heart failure. Funeral services are at 10 am Tuesday at St. John's Basilica at 19th St. and University Avenue in Des Moines. After lunch at the Basilica, the burial will follow at 2 pm at Iowa Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Van Meter.

Robert was born August 23, 1928 in Ryan, Iowa, the son of James and Catherine (McDonald) DeLay. He graduated from Manchester High School where he was a star player for the baseball and basketball teams. One professional baseball team scout was disappointed that he missed the opportunity to meet Robert, as the young recruit had just begun his service in the Air Force.

He served four years with the 97th Bomb Wing and was discharged in 1952 with the rank of Staff Sargeant. Robert was part of the group that transported atomic weapons to England.

Robert was an avid Hawkeye fan, loved all sports and was greatly interested in history and politics.

Following his service, Robert attended the University of Iowa and graduated in 1956 with a degree in business administration. Shortly after graduating he met Marilyn, his wife of 53 years.

Robert worked with Travelers Insurance for over 35 years and following retirement worked as a field manager with the Iowa Census Bureau for the 1990 and 2000 census.

He is survived by his five children, Daniel (Margaret) of Dallas, Michael of Waterloo, Kathleen of Des Moines, Susan Mariella (Joseph) of Vernon Hills, Illinois and Thomas of San Francisco; 9 grandchildren and his sister, Virginia of Manchester.

Visitation is from 5 to 7 pm Monday at Westover Funeral Home at 6337 Hickman Road in Des Moines. Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to St. Judes or any Childrens charity if your choice.
