Obituary

Robert Joseph "Bob" O'Brien, 86, formerly of Hartley, IA and Waukee, IA, passed from this life on Wednesday, December 8, 2010, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. In agreement with Bob's wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 13, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, located at 1200 Warrior Lane in Waukee, where the family will greet friends from 9:30 a.m. until the mass time on Monday. A committal service and burial of the cremated remains will take place at a later date at Pleasant View Cemetery in Hartley, Iowa.

Bob was born on May 26, 1924 in Curlew, Iowa to James Michael and Erna Pearl (Brechler) O'Brien. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Church in Curlew. Bob was a graduate of Graettinger High School in Graettinger, IA. He was an army veteran of the Korean Conflict. After 34 months in the service, he attended Creighton University in Omaha, NE.

Bob married Leola Ruth Fredericks on September 11, 1950 in Sanborn, IA, and their marriage was blessed with three daughters. Bob was formerly employed with the U.S. Postal Service in Hartley for 30 years. His favorite past-time was golf and officiating High School sports. He was an avid fan of Hartley High School Football and Notre Dame Football. Most of all, Bob loved watching his grandchildren play sports.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Leola O'Brien of Des Moines; three daughters, Pam (Doug) Stange of Baxter, MN, Shelley (Robert) Wiltgen of Rochester, MN and Sandra (Dr. Robert) Rondinelli of Urbandale; two brothers, James (Shirley) O'Brien of Milbank, SD and William O'Brien of Sioux City, IA; one sister, Eileen Clark of Hartley; six grandchildren, Andrea and Nathan Stange, Brandon and Cory Wiltgen, and Jamie and Wesley Rondinelli; and a host of many other relatives and friends. Bob was preceded into eternal life by his parents; and one sister, Florence Maurstad.

The family has respectfully requested that any memorial contributions be made to The Robert J. O'Brien Memorial Fund, c/o Iles Funeral Homes – Westover Chapel, 6337 Hickman Road; Des Moines, IA 50322. A fund has been established to go to Hartley High School Football.
