Obituary

Robert Roy Jordan, Jr., son of Eleanor and Robert Roy, died Sunday, January 23, 2005 after a long battle with cancer. Bob was born August 17, 1921 in Dallas Center. He lived with his Aunt Irene several years before moving to DeSoto with his parents. After graduating from DeSoto H.S. he enrolled at Drake University and graduated from Drake Law School in 1946 after serving his country in the Army Air Corps. Bob was stationed in Italy with the 250th Squadron as a nose gunner in the B-24’s. After 50 missions completed he returned to the states and was discharged as a staff sergeant in 1945.

Bob married his high school sweetheart Helen Petty in 1943. He was a devoted husband and father. Bob practiced law for 55 years in Des Moines. He involved himself in many community activities including; Boy Scouts, Y‘s-men, Kiwanis, and Grace Methodist Church. He volunteered for Hospice, Meals on Wheels, and was a board member of the West Des Moines Historical Society. Bob was instrumental in restoring the Jordan House, a nationally recognized stopover on the Underground Railroad, and on the National Registry of historic sites. As the last descendent to have lived in the Jordan House, Bob guided tours through the house since 1979. He actively enjoyed and supported Drake men’s and women’s Basketball for the past 20 years.

Robert is survived by his son Robert (Kathy) Jordan of Waterloo, daughter Patricia (Edward) Berkley of Winona, MN, four grandchildren; Jennifer (Kevin) Deroos of Urbandale, Scot (Becky) Berkley of Owatonna, MN, Jeff (Jessy) Berkley of DeForest, WI, Lynn Berkley, of Atlanta, GA, and four great grandchildren; Jordan and Cameron Deroos and Luke and Marc Berkley. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Helen L. Jordan.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to an 11:00am memorial service at Grace United Methodist Church. Memorial contributions can be made to the West Des Moines Historical Society or Grace United Methodist Church.
