Robert Van Horn, 80, died Tuesday, August 23, 2005 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston from a reoccurrence of cancer.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 27, 2005 at 10 a.m. at Plymouth Congregational Church in Des Moines, where he was a life long member. A reception will follow at the church.

Robert was born on February 2, 1925 to Jim and Julia Van Horn in St. Louis, MO. He was one of five children. He attended the V12 program at Iowa State University where he met his wife, Eileen Dudgeon. While at Iowa State, he received an appointment to the Naval Academy at Annapolis from which he graduated in Engineering in the class of 1948A. Married in 1947, Robert and Eileen recently celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary.

Along with Eileen, Robert founded Van Horn Plastics in Des Moines in 1948. He innovated plastic fabrication techniques and continued to produce creative plastic products over the 50 years they operated the business. Robert also founded Foam Molding Company where he pioneered structural foam products and manufacturing processes.

Bob's life long passions include the love of building with great craftsmanship, including everything from art to houses. In his years after retirement in 1997, he devoted full-time efforts to Habitat for Humanity projects in both Iowa and South Carolina. Robert was a creative, kind and gentle man.

Survivors include his wife, Eileen Van Horn; a daughter, Carol Van Horn of Waukee, Iowa; a daughter, Barbara (Philip) Svanoe of Urbandale, Iowa; his brother, Tom Van Horn of Morris, Illinois; and a sister, Betty Blandin of St. Louis.

Memorial contributions can be made to Habitat for Humanity in care of Plymouth Congregational Church.
