Obituary

Robert William Freed “Bob” was born April 23, 1924 to Carl Harold Freed and Mildred Olson Freed in Carthage, SD. Three years later he was joined by a sister Dorothy Marie. He shook hands with his maker on April 24, 2019 at the age of 95.

He attended four different country one room schools and two high schools to obtain his education. Before he even graduated from high school he was farming a half section of land. In 1949 he decided to leave South Dakota and moved to Southwest Iowa to work as a hired hand on his uncle’s farm. In 1954 he left the farm and came to Des Moines and became a locksmith, which became his profession. About this time he met Marian McCullough and there was eight year courtship and was married July 29, 1959.

Both he and his wife were avid hunters and each had their own Vizsla dog and enjoyed watching them work. Bob used one of the dogs as a Therapy Dog and visited nursing homes.

Bob enjoyed doing counted cross stitch, this was his way of recovering from Open Heart Surgery and he enjoyed entering the Iowa State Fair and received many blue ribbons.

In later years he became an avid reader and has collected a number of paperback books of his favorite authors.

Bob volunteered for many jobs at Scottish Rite Park as helping with locks, being a leader in the water classes and a big job of counting and identifying all the trees on the property.

He was a member of Acanthus Lodge, Scottish Rite Consistory, The Scottish Rite Masonic Breakfast, and Plymouth United Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his wife Marian and his mother, father and sister Dorothy.

He is survived by a Loving Companion Ing Sherer, Nieces and Nephews.

Memorials may be made to Scottish Rite Park.
