Robert W. Gifford, 80, died of leukemia Saturday, August 11, 2007 at Hospice of Central Iowa Kavanagh House in Des Moines.

Bob was born June 22, 1927 at Buffalo, N.Y., son of Elmer E. and Doris Young Gifford. His early working years from the 1940’s to early 1950’s were spent at various radio stations in the Buffalo area and other New York state locations as announcer, writer or reporter.

Bob served in the U. S. Army 1953-1955 as a writer and producer for Armed Forces Radio Service in Europe. His nearly 30 year association with Iowa’s Palmer Broadcasting Corporation began in 1955 at WOC Radio and TV in Davenport, IA where he was Chief Copy Writer and later Radio Program Director. Subsequently, as WHO Des Moines Program Director from 1964-1984, he specialized primarily in Talk Radio programming. Among the talk programs he pioneered were “Phone Forum” (featuring, at various times, Bob Williams, Duane Ellett, Lee Kline and Julie Gammack as hosts), “Call Jim Zabel” and “Clear Channel Conversation.” Non-talk programs he introduced included the “Don Warren Morning Show” and “Country Music USA.”

After leaving WHO in 1984 he spent his semi-retirement years as “Storm Kennedy” a weather reporter for KJJY Des Moines. In 1993 he was inducted into the Des Moines Metro Radio Broadcasters’ Association for Outstanding Lifetime Radio Broadcast Service to the City of Des Moines.

Bob retired fully in 1997. His life-long hobbies were travel and reading. Survivors include his son, Robert of Des Moines; sister, Jan Butler of Chatham, MA; 3 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

The remains were cremated. The family will receive friends at a memorial visitation to be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, August 20 at Iles Funeral Homes-Dunn’s Chapel. Memorial contributions are being directed to Hospice of Central Iowa Kavanagh House.
