Robert George Whitmore, 76, died on Tuesday, February 15, 2005 at Trinity Center at Luther Park, in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 19, at Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Funeral Home, in Madrid, with burial following at Fairview Cemetery, north of Madrid. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. on Friday, February 18, at the funeral home, where the family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Bob was born July 29, 1928 in Estes Park, Colorado. His family moved to Iowa in 1933 and he graduated from Madrid High School in 1946. Bob worked for the FBI in Washington, DC before enlisting with the United States Army. He served from January of 1951, until he was honorably discharged in December of 1952.
He graduated from Mexico City College in 1959 and taught school in Mexico City. After returning to Iowa, he taught school in Corwith and Huxley. Bob later earned a BS degree in Horticulture at Iowa State University, in Ames. He served as a Boone County Supervisor from 1991 to 1994.
Bob was a member of the Madrid Garden Club and the Madrid Historical Society. He also volunteered many years in various capacities at the Madrid Home. He enjoyed oil painting, reading and gardening, frequently earning blue ribbons with his floral arrangements. He also enjoyed spoiling his many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents, George P. and Hazel O. (Andrews) Whitmore; two brothers, Charlie Whitmore and John M. Whitmore and his wife Wanda; and one brother-in-law, Grant Kindwall.
He is survived by his sisters: Madeline Kindwall of Denver, CO; Ethel Robinett and her husband Cliff of Madrid; Ramona Bracht and her husband Todd of Homer, AK; Betty Jean Whitman of Claremont, CA and Susan Severino and her husband Jim of Des Moines; his brother, Raymond Whitmore and his wife Marilyn of Woodward; and numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends.
