Roger was born on September 19, 1942 to Elmer and Gertrude (Olstead) Zobel. He grew up in Lake Park, Iowa. He attended college at South Dakota State University, where he earned a degree in pharmacy. On June 19, 1965, he was united in marriage to Jane Gillespie.

Music was always an important part of Roger’s life. In college he played in a band and during summer vacations the band traveled to many places in the Midwest. He and his fellow band members were later inducted into the South Dakota Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He also composed music and made several recordings of the compositions.

Roger is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jane; his son, Mark A. Zobel; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth W. Zobel; granddaughter, Bailey Anne Zobel; two sisters, Rebecca Groff of Cedar Rapids and Katherine Greiner of Flint, Michigan and several nieces and great nieces and nephews.
